With the help of the Indiana department of transportation GIS, DIRT has acquired GIS data which classifies Indiana roads based on the data sent to the state each year by the individual counties.

The map at present only shows the roads with in the Hoosier National Forest that have been reported to the state by the county that are in the following classifications:

  1. unimproved, earth, barely passable (Red)
  2. graded earth (Green)
  3. gravel/stone (Blue)
  4. chip seal (Burgundy)

Please feel free to utilize this information as it is public information passed on by the state.

HELP how do I use this thing?

(UPDATE) I have recieved feed back on the map regarding the time it takes to load.
The way this works is that the map consists of small images.
(No warries about eating up disk space on your machine, each image is only 56kb in size).
At each zoom level it will download only those images for that zoom level and
cache those images on your machine (meaning you only download the images once
and your system will re-use them over and over again).
So the first time you use the map, it will seem slow to respond.. Give it time.
Zoom in as much as possible, yet allow your browser to download the images at each zoom level.
You will see a marked improvement in performance with each use of the map.

Well here's how:

As you see below, the Maps are displayed as an overlay of  Google Maps.  (For simplicity and ease of use.)

The menu to the left serves a dual purpose.

  1. It is a Key for showing you which colors indicate which road classification INDOT has given it.
  2. The buttons are used to show only a percentage of color over the map, the higher the percentage the greater detail you will see.

Here is an example with 1/4 button selected:

Here is an example of the Data Button Selected:

The use of the buttons helps a lot when looking at details on the Satellite maps.

Now for the interesting Feature!  Feature is geek speak for realy cool stuff (LOL).

Once you have zoomed in to the point were you begin to see roads names.

Use the hand icon and get the fingers right at the point of the map were you want to know the gps waypoint data, this is were it gets cool.

Use the left mouse button and just click!.

Now, go to the other end of the road and do the same again....

You can do this as much as you need to get the detailed information to be sure you are on a legal road (According to INDOT's data).

In the near future we will be working with INDOT to keep this data as up to date as possible.

Future plans also include a full map of Indiana which identifies all roads with the above classifications. (Keep an eye on us).
